Chasing Totality by Everen T. Brown

Total Solar Eclipses are unique experiences often witnessed once or twice in a lifetime - if you are lucky! During totality (the part where the eclipse glasses come OFF) you stand in the shadow of the moon and look directly at sun, for those precious few moments of nature’s ultimate spectacle. Counted in minutes and seconds – the eclipse experience means different things to different people. To me, that magical moment means I am one with the universe! For that short amount of time, the sun, the moon and myself, are in prefect alignment!  I savor the moment – knowing this feat will not to be repeated from that same spot within my lifetime.

Some people are overcome with emotion. Others are too busy photographing it - to even comprehend what they are seeing with their own eyes. I try to take it all in and create a mental “picture” of totality, so when someone asks me about it – I can describe some element of it. I want to etch it into my mind so it will last a lifetime.

For dedicated Eclipse Chasers like me, solar eclipses – both total and annular - become a reason to travel the world to enjoy this unique solar phenomenon. Most eclipses require a bit of travel and are often in extreme destinations. Lucky are the few that can enjoy an eclipse from their backyard!

To make this unique solar experience happen, you must put yourself within the “path of totality”. I am excited about the next two solar eclipses – the Mediterranean Eclipse of 2026 and the Egypt Eclipse of 2027. Both are unique in their own way. The Mediterranean Eclipse will sink into the sea - just after 3rd contact. For Egypt - the drawing card is 6 minutes and 22 seconds of totality.

After 2028, solar eclipse paths will be much more difficult to travel to, as many are only viewable from uninhabited areas of planet earth. So, take advantage of these two easy to travel to – solar eclipses!
