Choosing your honeymoon destination is one of those decisions that sounds simple and turns out to be genuinely complicated. There are hundreds of "top honeymoon destinations" lists on the internet — and most of them are essentially the same article restated, ranking beautiful places without telling you what actually separates a spectacular honeymoon from an expensive disappointment.
This list is different. As travel advisors who have planned hundreds of romantic honeymoons, we're going to tell you which destinations are worth the hype, which ones depend heavily on what type of travelers you are, and what each one actually costs in 2026.
Bora Bora, French Polynesia — Best for Overwater Bungalow Dreams
Best for: Couples whose first priority is an iconic, deeply romantic luxury experience in a spectacular natural setting.
Budget range: $10,000–$25,000+ for a 7–10 night trip for two, including flights from the US.
Honest assessment: Bora Bora is everything it looks like in photos — and that's both its greatest strength and its one limitation. If you want to venture out, explore local culture, or vary your experience beyond the lagoon, the island itself is small and the activities are somewhat repetitive after a few days. But for couples who genuinely want to disconnect in one of the world's most beautiful settings, with overwater bungalows surrounded by shark-and-ray-filled turquoise water, it delivers completely.
The Maldives — Best for True Seclusion
Best for: Couples who want to feel genuinely alone in the world.
Budget range: $12,000–$30,000+ for 7–10 nights, depending on resort.
Honest assessment: The Maldives takes the overwater bungalow concept to its extreme — many resorts are entire private islands, accessible only by seaplane. The experience of waking up surrounded by nothing but Indian Ocean in every direction is genuinely unlike anywhere else on earth.
The dining is extraordinary at the top properties. The diving and snorkeling are world-class.
The one honest caveat: travel time from Atlanta is significant (typically 20+ hours) and the value-for-money ratio is lower than most destinations at a comparable price point. Worth it for the right couple — but we always make sure clients understand what they're paying for.
Amalfi Coast, Italy — Best for Romance With a Cultural Backdrop
Best for: Couples who want extraordinary natural beauty combined with Italian food, wine, and culture.
Budget range: $8,000–$18,000 for 10–14 nights including flights.
Honest assessment: The Amalfi Coast in summer is one of the most beautiful places on earth — and also one of the most crowded. Our strong recommendation: visit in late May or September rather than July–August. The shoulder months bring fewer tourists, lower prices, warm water, and all the beauty with a fraction of the congestion. Pair it with a few days in Positano and then a short drive to Capri, or combine with Rome or the Amalfi hinterland villages for a richer trip.
Patagonia — Best for Adventurous Couples
Best for: Active couples who define romance as sharing extraordinary experiences, not lying on a beach.
Budget range: $10,000–$20,000 for 12–16 nights including flights.
Honest assessment: Patagonia is not a conventional honeymoon destination — and that's exactly why some couples love it more than any tropical resort. Watching the sun set over Torres del Paine together, standing at the edge of Perito Moreno Glacier as it calves into the lake below, hiking to a viewpoint where you can see nothing but mountains in every direction — these are the memories that couples who choose Patagonia talk about for decades. If you and your partner are at your best in the outdoors, this is worth serious consideration.
St. Lucia — Best Caribbean Honeymoon
Best for: Couples who want a Caribbean island with more personality than a standard all-inclusive.
Budget range: $5,000–$12,000 for 7–10 nights including flights from Atlanta.
Honest assessment: St. Lucia consistently tops our list for Caribbean honeymoons because it combines the tropical setting — volcano views, lush rainforest, clear water — with a level of intimacy and natural drama that most Caribbean islands can't match. Properties like Jade Mountain and Anse Chastanet are purpose-built for romance. And compared to Bora Bora or the Maldives, the value is significantly better for a comparable luxury experience.
Portugal — Best European Honeymoon for Value
Best for: Couples who love Europe but want something fresher than Paris or Rome.
Budget range: $5,000–$10,000 for 10–14 nights including flights.
Honest assessment: Portugal is the best-value luxury destination in Western Europe. Lisbon's neighborhoods are extraordinary, the Douro Valley wine country rivals anything in France or Italy, and the Algarve coast offers dramatic cliffs and beautiful beaches. For couples who want a European honeymoon with excellent food, beautiful wine, manageable logistics, and a real sense of discovery, Portugal delivers at a price point that's genuinely hard to match anywhere else on the continent.
How to Choose Between Them
The right honeymoon destination is a function of three things: what kind of travelers you are, how much time you have, and what you want to feel during the trip. A couple who gets restless at a beach resort after two days will not be happy in the Maldives, no matter how beautiful. A couple who finds hiking stressful will not find Patagonia romantic.
Our best advice: before you commit to a destination, have an honest conversation with your partner about your best travel memories together and what made those trips feel right. Then call us — because matching your travel personality to the right destination is exactly what a good travel advisor does.
